How to combat that ol' dull feeling......No idea. I have tried completing more concepts, getting exercise and even attempted tackling over 100 pages on one of my favorite subculture blogs.
Nothing seems to be working. Maybe it is the time of year, dove gray skies making way to the upside down abyss of the night (sans Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio).
Maybe a story would help and not just any story, a story that paints a picture of a young boy confused by graphic design in a graphic universe.
It was the early 80's, I remember driving past the local mall which at the time was a quarter of the size it is now and looking at the big box on the north east corner that showcased a vibrant yellow backlit logo. It was the Bay and I only new this because this was where I went when my mom piled my two brothers in the car and headed for what she called "The Bay".
For the entire summer and to be honest maybe a few months beyond, I stared at that sign whenever it was in my field of vision, even as I passed it I would cock my neck and follow it as it disappeared into the horizon..
The ?ay How does that make sense? what is that friggin big yellow swoopy linear thing? I know it may have been obvious to the rest of you out there but not all of us are so open to loose type at this age.
The languid yellow line joined the repertoire of "logos" that I didn't quite get at the time (for your information I had a hard time with the original Toronto Blue Jays logo as well) and as the list grew i figured maybe i should just ask someone.... I didn't. I spent time figuring it out, looking at other logos spanning from sports teams the like of the Milwaukee Brewers to the simple typeset of the Pop Shoppe. I became obsessed.
Pretty soon I figured out the stylized "B" and my older brother took it upon himself to inform me of the location of the bird in the Jay's logo and through eavesdropping I fulfilled my destiny.
Yep small potatoes to some but a victory to a little boy who found excitement in guessing commercials within the first 3 seconds of running time but that's another story.
A bit embarrassed by the memory but who really gives a care or whatever.. (that's right I just wrote that, a grown ass man writing like a teen :) LOL OMG I'm an idiot.
I should get back to the job they pay me to do.
